Shiojiri (塩尻市 Shiojiri-shi?) is a city located in Nagano, Japan. Its name literally means "the end of salt".

History

Municipal Area Changes

  • April 1, 1927-The village of Shiojiri gained town status.
  • April 1, 1959-The city was founded when the town of Shiojiri merged with the villages of Kataoka, Hirooka, Souga, and Chikumazi.
  • April 1, 1960-The city lost Kitauchida area to the city of Matsumoto.
  • April 1, 1961-The city lost Gakenoyu area to the city of Matsumoto.
  • June 28, 1961-The city absorbed the village of Seba.
  • May 1, 1968-Nishichikuma District changed their name to Kiso District.
  • April 1, 1982-The city surrendered parts of Seba (eastside of airport) to the city of Matsumoto.
  • April 1, 2005-The city absorbed the village of Narakawa from Kiso District.

Shiojiri is a minor transport hub for central Japan, as it sits at the junction of road and rail routes to Nagano, Nagoya, and Tokyo. The Chūō Main Line, Chūō Expressway, and Nagano Expressway all run through Shiojiri.

Tourist attractions

Shiojiri is the location of the Hiraide ruins, one of the three largest ancient ruins in Japan. Artifacts from the Jōmon period through the Heian period have been discovered there, as well as the remains of 47 ancient dwellings.
